Huskers Outlast Red Raiders

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team rallied to pick up its 17th victory of the season with a 4-3 victory over Texas Tech on Friday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers won the final two matches after being down 3-2 to take the team victory and improve their Big 12 record to 6-0 and its overall record to 17-2. It was the longest match of the season for the Huskers, which wasn't completed until 4 and 1/2 hours after the 4 p.m. start.

Jennifer Holmberg's three-set victory at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2, sealed the victory for the Huskers, who earned a crucial Big 12 victory leading up to their showdown with No. 1 Baylor on Sunday. Holmberg, who won her first set but lost the second in a set tiebreaker, won the final four games in the third set over TTU's Lorena Aviles.

The match between the teams started outdoors in near perfect weather conditions, but was moved indoors for the finish of the final singles match between Holmberg and Aviles, which was temporarily suspended at 2-2 in the third set due to darkness.

The Huskers went up 2-0 to start the match but found themselves down 3-2 after Texas Tech took three straight singles matches. Wiveca Swarting won in three sets at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-2, to tie the match at 3-3, leaving No. 5 singles as the final and deciding match of the day. Holmberg, who won the first set but dropped the second in a match tiebreaker,

The Huskers narrowly picked up the doubles point to start the match. With each team having won a doubles match, Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg rallied to force a set tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles, where they eventually pulled out the victory to give the Huskers the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. It was the sixth win in as many tries for the duo in Big 12 play.

Weatherholt earned her 16th singles victory of the spring and improved her Big 12 singles record to 6-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Natalie Leitch at No. 2 singles to give NU a 2-0 lead.

The Huskers wrap up their home schedule on Sunday as they take on No. 1 Baylor. The Huskers will honor senior Wiveca Swarting who will be playing in her final home match as a Husker and will leave NU as one of its most successful players in school history. First serve against the Bears is scheduled for Noon at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
