Huskers Defeat Cowgirls for School-Record 20th Win

Stillwater, Okla. - The Nebraska women's tennis team set a new team record for wins in a season as it collected its 20th of the year with a 4-3 win over No. 57 Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon. The Huskers improved to 20-4 overall on the year and 9-2 in the Big 12, which is good enough for a third-place finish in the conference.

Due to inclement weather approaching the area, the two teams started off with singles play. The Cowgirls took a 1-0 lead after a win at No. 4 singles, but the Huskers responded with four straight wins. Wiveca Swarting gave NU its fourth point of the match with a tough, three-set victory over Alisa Buslaieva, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-4. Jennifer Holmberg also earned her team-leading 20th singles win of the spring with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. Janine Weinreich and Mary Weatherholt also won in singles play, while Madeleine Geibert just missed out on a victory at No. 1 singles after losing in a third-set tiebreaker.

Doubles matches weren't played due to the fact that the Huskers had already locked up the team victory, but the point went to OSU.

The Huskers will enter the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas, next week with a No. 3 seed, which gives them a first-round bye. With the strong finish to the season, Nebraska has put itself in prime position to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005, and could also wind up with their highest final regular-season ranking in team history.

The Big 12 Championships start on Thursday, April 29, and run through Sunday, May 2.
