College Station, Texas - The No. 49 Nebraska women's tennis team upset No. 34 Texas A&M 5-2 on Saturday afternoon in College Station, Texas. The Huskers improved to 18-4 on the year and 7-2 in conference play, and are one win away from tying a school record for wins in a season.
The Huskers once again took the doubles point after doing the same against Texas on Friday, which is a crucial point in any match, especially one on the road against a ranked opponent. After A&M won at No. 1 doubles, Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles, while No. 2 doubles went into a tiebreaker. NU's Wiveca Swarting and Janine Weinreich came away with a 7-3 win in the tiebreaker to give the Huskers the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Nebraska went up 2-0 after Weinreich won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to snap a four-match losing streak. Texas A&M got on the board after a win at No. 3 singles to cut the lead to 2-1. Holmberg put the Huskers on the brink of victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles to extend the NU lead to 3-1.
A&M wasn't going to go away quietly, earning a win at No. 2 singles to make it 3-2 Nebraska, and then forcing a third set in the remaining two singles matches. But the Huskers weren't going to be denied the upset, as Stefanie Weinstein clinched the match with a three-set win at No. 4 singles. Weatherholt finished with a three-set victory of her own over the 65th-ranked player in the country, Elze Potgieter.
The win over the Aggies marked the highest-ranked opponent Nebraska has beaten since 2005, and also matches their conference win total from last season, with two matches left on the slate this year.
The Huskers close the regular season next weekend with matches at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. NU has a chance to secure at least third in the conference standings with two wins, which would also put them at 20 wins on the season and set a new school record.
