Longhorns Defeat Huskers

Austin, Texas - The No. 49 Nebraska women's tennis team fell to the No. 20 Texas Longhorns 6-1 on Friday afternoon in Austin, Texas. The Huskers fell to 6-2 in the conference and 17-4 overall, while Texas improved to 11-4 and 6-1 in Big 12 play.

With the threat of inclement weather looming in the area, the teams elected to play the singles matches first. The Huskers were very competitive in all six matches against the tough Texas singles lineup, which features three of the top 60 players in the country. However, Nebraska wasn't able to finish off any of the matches, losing all six to the Longhorns.

NU sophomore Mary Weatherholt pushed the No. 22 player in the country, Aeriel Ellis, to three sets at No. 1 singles, but ultimately fell 6-4 in the final set. Fellow sophomore Madeleine Geibert also pushed her opponent to three sets, No. 58 Vanja Corovic, but lost in a third set supertiebreaker. Each match had at least one set go 7-5, all in Texas' favor, which means the Huskers were right there and competitive, but ultimately unable to secure a point in singles play.

The teams played doubles after the completion of the singles matches, and the Huskers were able to secure a point after winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, accounting for the final 6-1 scoreline.

The Huskers play at No. 37 Texas A&M on Saturday evening. The Huskers will be searching for their seventh Big 12 win, as well as trying to improve their resume for a possible NCAA Tournament berth in May.
