Lawrence, Kan. ? The Nebraska track and field team returned to Memorial Stadium on Thursday morning for the second day of the 83rd running of the Kansas Relays. Megan Wheatley highlighted the day for NU with a win in the women’s heptathlon, while Suzanne Higgins also added a win in the 800 meters.
After finished day one of the heptathlon in second place, Wheatley made a charge over the final three events on day two to take the meet title with 5,323 points. The Perth, Australia, native posted a second-place finish in the final three events, including the long jump (18-5 1/4), javelin (113-11) and 800 meters (2:18.25). Wheatley is the sixth Husker to win the heptathlon since it was added to the Kansas Relays in 1981 and the first to win since 2007, when Cassie Witte won with a score of 5,255 points. NU’s Lorena Menghia finished sixth in the first heptathlon of her Husker career with 4,716 points.
On the men’s side, Teran Walford did his best to complete a sweep of the combined events for NU, but came up short with a second-place decathlon score of 6,785 points. Walford opened day two with the top 110-hurdle time at 15.56, and then finished the competition with four straight personal bests. The redshirt freshman placed third in the discus (113-5), fourth in the pole vault (14-5 1/2), second in the javelin (149-10) and first in the 1,500 meters (4:35.76).
Higgins opened the running portion of Thursday with a winning time of 2:13.76 in the 38-athlete unseeded 800 meters. Dani Dapo then placed third out of 63 runners in the men’s race with a time of 1:54.47. Todd Gulizia added a sixth-place finish in the 5,000 meters later in the night with a time of 14:47.14.
The women’s hammer throwers contributed two top-five finishes, as Jade Hodson placed fourth (176-8) and Samantha Musil finished fifth (176-0).
The Huskers will be back at Memorial Stadium tomorrow starting at 9:05 a.m. with the women’s 100-meter hurdle preliminaries. NU will also open the Mt. SAC Relays tomorrow in Walnut, Calif., at 1 p.m. (Central) with the women’s 1,500 meters. Live results of both meets can be found at Huskers.com.
