Huskers Fall to No. 1 Baylor

Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team fell short in its upset bid over Baylor as the Bears beat the Huskers 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers fell to 17-3 and 6-1 in the Big 12, while Baylor improved to 18-2 and 6-0 in the conference.

It was the final home match for the Huskers this season, who honored senior Wiveca Swarting as she was playing in her final home competition as a Husker. Nebraska went 14-2 on the season on their home court. Swarting came close in upsetting the 59th-ranked player in the country, Taylor Ormond, but fell in three sets, 2-6, 7-6 (1), (10-4).

Baylor took a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches, with 8-1, 8-6, and 8-5 victories at the three positions, leaving Nebraska in a tough position to climb out of a hole against Baylor's excellent singles lineup, which features four of the top 100 players in the country.

The Bears extended their lead to 3-0 after wins at No. 4 and No. 2 singles. Mary Weatherholt, playing at No. 2 singles, suffered her first loss in Big 12 play and ends her four-match singles win streak. Baylor's Lenka Broosova clinched the win for the Bears with a win at No. 1 singles over Madeleine Geibert.

Baylor earned victories at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, but NU got a point from Jennifer Holmberg at No. 6 singles, who earned a three-set victory over Cara Lindlar, 6-3, 4-6, (13-11), who picked up her team-high-tying 16th singles win of the spring.

The Huskers have four regular season matches left on the schedule, all on the road against Big 12 South opponents. NU starts with a trip to Texas next Friday and plays at Texas A&M next Saturday.
