Huskers Storm Past Broncos

Tucson, Ariz.---Playing outdoors for the first time of the season, the Nebraska men's tennis team defeated the Santa Clara Broncos, 6-1, on Saturday, March 6 at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson, Ariz. The win improves the Huskers' record to 7-3 and extends their winning streak to four matches. The Broncos fell to 7-4 with the loss. Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott said the Huskers had to adjust to playing outdoors for the first time of the season.

"This is our first match outdoors since the end of last October, so it took a little time to get used it." McDermott said.  "We were our own worst enemies today, but we found a way to win and showed some good mental toughness, so that was a good thing."

The Huskers captured the doubles point after David Bendheim and Calin Paar (NU) defeated Kyle Dandan and Nicolas Vinel 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, and Benedikt Lindheim and Francois Van Impe (NU) took down Andrew Kells and Grant Fleming (SCU) at the No. 3 spot.

"It was a very competitive match, especially in doubles," McDermott said. "We bounced back after struggling early and did a good job of picking up the (doubles) point."

In singles, sophomore Christopher Aumueller (NU) defeated Dandan (SCU) in three sets at the No. 1 spot. After dropping the first set, Aumueller battled back to take the next two sets and the match, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. Paar (NU) defeated Brian Brogan (SCU) 6-0, 4-6, 7-6, at the No. 2 spot to improve his record to 8-1 on the season.

After starting the season 0-5 in singles play, Stenger (NU) has now won three straight matches after taking down Venel (SCU) 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, at the No. 5 spot. The Huskers also got singles victories from Van Impe (NU) at the No. 4 spot, and Lindheim at the No. 6 spot.

The Huskers return to action on Sunday, March 7, when they face off against No. 35 Arizona at the Lanelle Robson Tennis Center . Start time for the match against Arizona has been moved up to 11 a.m.
