Huskers Top Jayhawks Behind Strong Singles Play

Lawrence, Kan. - The Nebraska women's tennis team used strong singles play to defeat the Kansas Jayhawks 5-2 on Sunday afternoon in Lawrence, Kan. The Huskers improved to 15-2 on the year and 4-0 in the Big 12, while KU fell to 9-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Nebraska, which had taken the doubles point in its previous five matches, failed to secure the point on Sunday after winning only one of the three doubles matches, an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles by Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg, the duo's seventh consecutive win in doubles play.

The Huskers stormed back with strong singles play, however, and quickly erased the 1-0 deficit as they won the first four completed singles matches, all in straight sets. Weatherholt, Holmberg, Madeleine Geibert and Wiveca Swarting each cruised in their singles matches to earn the Huskers four points and clinch the team victory. Stefanie Weinstein came away with a three set victory, while KU earned another point in a three-set victory over NU's Janine Weinreich.

Nebraska is off to one of the best starts in school history, and has a chance to match the team's win total from the previous two years (16) with a match next weekend at Iowa State. First serve against the Cyclones is set for 2:30 p.m. in Ames, Iowa.
