Irvine, Calif. - The Nebraska women's tennis team edged the UC Irvine Anteaters 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in Irvine, Calif. The Huskers rebounded from a loss to Long Beach State on Friday and improved to 13-2 overall on the year, and defeated their third ranked opponent of the season.
The Huskers once again came out strong in doubles play, much like it did against LBSU. NU took all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles play. Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein earned an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, their fourth straight victory at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Nebraska took a commanding 3-0 lead after Wiveca Swarting (6-0, 6-0) and Jennifer Holmberg (6-1, 6-1) earned easy victories in singles play. The Anteaters battled back, taking the next two matches at Nos. 3 and 4 singles to cut the NU lead to 3-2.
Mary Weatherholt clinched the victory for Nebraska, earning a hard-fought three-set win at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 over UCI's Courtney Byron. The Anteaters took the final point of the day with a three-set win at No. 1 singles, making the final score 4-3.
The Huskers finished their non-conference schedule with an 11-1 record, with their only loss coming to nationally-ranked Tulsa. Nebraska turns its attention to Big 12 play, where they already have a 2-0 conference record with wins over Colorado and Missouri. NU returns home to play Kansas State on Friday, March 26. First serve is at 5 p.m. at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
