Huskers Fall to Long Beach State

Long Beach, Calif. - The Nebraska women's tennis team suffered its second loss of the season on Friday evening as it lost to Long Beach State, 5-2, in its first road match of the season. The Huskers dropped to 12-2 on the season, while the 49ers improved earned their sixth straight win and improved to 12-2.

The Huskers, who are ranked No. 42 heading in the latest ITA rankings, fell just short in earning its third win over a ranked opponent this season against the No. 53 49ers.

Nebraska started the match out with a victory in two out of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead. Jennifer Holmberg and Mary Weatherholt earned a win at No. 3 doubles while Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein won at No. 1 doubles.

Nebraska, whose strong suit all season has been its singles play, struggled on Friday against LBSU's singles lineup. Weatherholt, Holmberg and Wiveca Swarting all fell short for only the second time all season in singles play, although all three matches were close throughout before LBSU closed the deal.

Janine Weinreich earned Nebraska's lone singles point with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles.

The Huskers will look to rebound against UC Irvine on Sunday as they wrap up their California trip. The Anteaters are currently ranked 74th in the country. First serve will be at 11 a.m. local time, 1 p.m. central time.
