Blacksburg, Va.---The No. 25 Nebraska men's tennis team saw their eight match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday, March 17, after falling to the No. 22 Virginia Tech Hokies 5-2. With the loss the Huskers fall to 11-4 on the season, while the Hokies improved to 7-3. Playing on the road for the sixth straight match, the Huskers were able to win the doubles point, but couldn't carry that momentum into singles competition.
"After riding an eight match winning streak and it being St. Patrick's day, I felt like the Blarney Stone came tumbling down on us today," head coach Kerry McDermott said after Wednesday's match. "Virginia Tech has a very good single's lineup. They make you earn every point. I don't feel like we played bad today, I just think they played a little smarter."
In doubles, No. 54 Calin Paar and David Bendheim (NU) took down Will Beck and Patrick Daciek (VT) 9-8 at the No. 1 spot, while Benedikt Lindheim and Francois Van Impe defeated Luka Somen and Corrado Tucci (VT) at the No. 3 spot to clinch the doubles point for NU.
"I was pleasantly surprised with the doubles point," McDermott said. "We played much better today in doubles than we did against Utah. I felt like we belonged on the doubles court today."
The lone bright spot for NU in singles came at the No. 5 spot where Lindheim (NU) defeated Beck (VT) 7-6, 6-4, for the Huskers only other victory. No. 81 Paar fell to Yoann Re (VT) in three sets at the No. 1 spot, while No. 82 Aumueller (NU) was defeated by Somen (VT) 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 2 position.
The Huskers return to action on Friday, March 19, when the travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on the No. 64 South Carolina Gamecocks. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
