Featured Huskers of the Week: Janine Dutton and Joyce Kim

As the Nebraska rifle team prepares for the NCAA Championships this weekend, Huskers.com takes a closer look at two freshmen who have helped the team return to the top eight teams in the nation, Janine Dutton and Joyce Kim.

Dutton, from Eagle River, Alaska, is averaging 566.79 in smallbore and a team-best 584.07 in air rifle. She has won one smallbore title, one air rifle title and one combined title in her first year at NU.

Q. When did you first get interested in rifle and who got you started?
JD: "I was going to play a fall sport my freshman year of high school, and it was either swimming or rifle, and when I saw the swim outfits...the rest is self-explanatory. That is why I am here."

Q. What is your favorite rifle memory growing up?
JD: "It was when I got second at nationals in 3-P air rifle, and it was my first national match."

Q. Favorite discipline, smallbore or air rifle?
JD: "I love just shooting both. Standing is my favorite position."

Q. Any superstitions or routines before shooting?
JD: "I always wear my necklace with my cross, guardian angels, jade sandal and breast cancer awareness charm."

Q. Favorite meal?
JD: "Won Ton soup and steak."

Q. Favorite TV show?
JD: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

Q. Favorite movie?
JD: "Austin Powers."

Q. Favorite restaurant?
JD: "Picolino's."

Q. Thing I miss most about my hometown?
JD: "The mountains out of my window." 

Kim, from Gilbert, Ariz., is averaging 565.57 in smallbore and 581.21 in air rifle. Kim owns one individual air rifle title on the season.

Q. When did you first get interested in rifle and who got you started?
JK: "At 13 I started shooting recreationally with my dad. I started shooting competitively at 15."

Q. What is your favorite rifle memory growing up?
JK: "Shooting my first qualifying score to get into the Junior Olympics at the Olympic Training Center in 2008."

Q. Favorite discipline, smallbore or air rifle?
JK: "Smallbore."

Q. Interests besides rifle?
JK: "Fashion."

Q. Any superstitions or routines before shooting?
JK: "Relaxing and doing Ultimate You Actual Rehearsals."

Q. Favorite meal?
JK: "Steaks and veggies."

Q. Favorite TV show?
JK: "Project Runway, Rachel Zoe project."

JK: "Maroon 5, The Format, Coconut Records."
