Start time: 1 p.m. Huskers Travel to Arizona for Pair of Matches
The Nebraska men's tennis team will kick off a nine match road streak this weekend when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., for a pair of matches. In their first match, the Huskers will play Santa Clara on Saturday, March 6 at 1 p.m. NU will then play No. 35 Arizona on Sunday, March 7 at 1 p.m. to finish weekend play.
The Huskers enter the weekend after defeating Missouri Valley Conference foe Drake on Wednesday, March 3, 6-1, at the Nebraska Tennis Center to improve their record to 6-3. After starting the season with a 3-3 record, the Huskers have reeled off three straight victories, two of which came on the road against Michigan State and Western Michigan.
The match against Arizona will mark the fourth ranked opponent NU has faced this season, and third ranked inside the top 40. In those matches against ranked teams, the Huskers own a 1-2 record defeating No. 56 Radford, and falling to No. 31 Minnesota and No. 25 Wisconsin.
Last Time Out: Huskers Start Fast in Victory Over Drake
Before the Huskers left to play in nine straight road matches, NU hosted Drake at the Nebraska Tennis Center on Wednesday, March 3. The Huskers jumped on the Bulldogs early and didn't look back defeating them by a 6-1 score. The Huskers were lead by seniors David Bendheim and Francois Van Impe in singles, while Bendheim and Calin Paar won at the No.1 doubles spot to get the Huskers rolling.
At the No. 1 doubles spot, No. 54 Bendheim and Paar took down Mauricio Ballivian (DU) 8-4 to set the tone for NU. Christopher Aumueller and Andre Stenger improved their record to 4-0 on the season after taking down Jonathan Hadash and Guilherme Marsiglia (DU) 8-2 at the No. 2 spot.
In singles, the Bendheim was the first one off the court for NU after taking down Marsiglia (DU) 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot. Bendheim was quickly followed by Van Impe after he defeated Cesar Bracho (DU) 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot. At the No. 5 spot, Stenger got the best of Hadash (DU) in three sets at the No. 5 spot for his second singles victory of the season. No. 113 Aumueller defeated Ballivian (DU) at the No.1 spot, while No. 82 Paar to down McKie (DU) at the No 2 position.
Paar Looks to Continue Hot Streak
One of the hottest Huskers as of late is junior Calin Paar. The German native has won five matches in a row to improve his overall record to 7-1 on the season. Paar's play has vaulted him into the ITA"s singles ratings where he checks in at No. 92.
Van Impe Having Special Senior Season
In his last season as a Husker, senior Francois Van Impe is off to the best start of his career. Van Impe owns an 8-1 record in singles while playing primarily at the No. 4 spot, and sports a 5-2 doubles record with sophomore Benedikt Lindheim at the No. 3 position. Van Impe's combined 13 victories in doubles and singles leads the team, while his eight singles victories also leads the squad.
Aumueller, Stenger Finding Groove at No. 2 Doubles
After the Huskers struggled to collect the doubles point in two straight matches against Minnesota and Denver, coach McDermott mixed up the doubles lineup by moving Christopher Aumueller to the No. 2 position with Andre Stenger. The move paid dividends for the Huskers as Aumueller and Stenger are off to a blistering start going 4-0 since being paired together.
Bendheim, Paar Quite a Pair at No. 1 Doubles
Along with the Aumueller's move to the No. 2 doubles spot, McDermott moved David Bendheim to the No.1 doubles team with Calin Paar. The duo has been impressive so far going 3-1, including a victory over the No. 3 rated doubles team in the nation against Wisconsin. Their play has vaulted them into the ITA's national doubles rankings checking in a No. 54.
Huskers Hit the Road for Nine Straight Matches
After defeating Drake on Wednesday, the Huskers are set to play in nine straight road matches, including three against teams ranked inside the ITA's top 25. The nine match road trip includes matches against No. 23 BYU, No. 16 Virginia Tech, No. 41 South Carolina and No. 24 Tulsa.
Scouting the Arizona Wildcats
The Arizona Wildcats enter the weekend with a 6-3 overall record, but have dropped two straight matches to Texas Tech and Denver. Ranked at No. 35 in the ITA's latest rankings, Arizona sports a nationally ranked doubles team in Geoff Embry and Ravid Hazi, who are ranked at No. 51. The Wildcats own a perfect 5-0 record when playing at home this season. Arizona is coached by Tad Berkowitz.
Scouting the Santa Clara Broncos
The Broncos will enter Saturday's match playing some of their best tennis of the season after upsetting No. 74 Xavier 7-0 to improve their record to 7-2 on the season. Santa Clara is led in singles by Andrew Kells who has a team leading 13 victories, and Tom Pham who owns a 10-4 record on the season. The Broncos only two losses this season have come against No. 33 California and No. 26 Fresno Sate. Santa Clara is coached by Derek Mills.
