Lincoln ? Nebraska junior cross country runner Lara Crofford was named to the USTFCCCA 2009 Division I Cross Country All-Academic Team on Tuesday for the second straight year.
Crofford, who was named the team’s MVP for the third consecutive season in 2009, led the NU women to fourth-place finishes at the Big 12 Championships and NCAA Midwest Regional, before ending the season with an appearance at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., for the third straight season. While leading the Huskers on the course, Crofford also excelled in the classroom, as she carried a 3.33 GPA while majoring in nutrition science and dietetics.
A native of Newville, Pa., Crofford is the fourth women’s cross country runner in school history to be named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team twice, and the first to achieve the feat since Kayte Tranel earned her second honor 2005, after also being honored in 2003. Other multiple-time honorees include, Ann Gaffigan (2001, 2002, 2003) and Theresa Stelling (1992, 1993)
To be eligible for the award a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average and must finish among the top 15 finishers (or top 10 percent) of the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.
The 104 USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees represented 57 schools around the country. Nine were reported to have 4.0 cumulative GPAs at the end of the 2009 fall semester. The list also includes seven regional champions and three who finished in the nation’s top 10 at the NCAA Championships.
The Big Ten, Big 12, and BIG EAST Conferences each had 15 representatives claim the honor.
