Huskers Fall to No. 42 Tulsa

Lincoln, Neb.---The No. 48 Nebraska women's tennis team dropped its' first match of the season on Sunday, Feb. 28, to the No. 42 Tulsa Hurricanes by the score of 5-2. The loss drops the Huskers' record to 10-1 on the season, while Tulsa improved to 9-4 overall.

After dropping the doubles point, the Huskers found themselves in a 2-0 hole after dropping the No. 4 spot to open singles play. The Huskers battled back to win the next two singles matches and tie the score at 2-2, but were unable to complete the rally falling in the three remaining singles matches.

In doubles, the Huskers were only able to secure one victory which came at the No. 3 position where Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg (NU) defeated Rebecca Row and Michelle Farley (NU) 8-4. At the No. 1 spot, Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein fell to the No. 38-ranked team of Alexandra Kichoutkin and JoAnne Karaitiana (TUL) 8-5, while Wiveca Swarting and Janine Weinreich (NU) were defeated by Ewa Szatkowska and Anastasia Erofeeva (TUL) at the No. 2 spot.

The Huskers were lead in singles by Geibert (NU) who defeated Karaitiana (TUL) in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot for NU's first victory. The other singles victory for the Huskers came at the No. 3 spot where Swarting (NU) took down Erofeeva (TUL) 6-4, 6-2.

At the No. 6 spot, Farley (TUL) defeated Weinreich (NU) in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Holmberg (NU) was defeated by Row (TUL) at the No. 5 in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. No. 53 Weatherholt was defeated at the No. 1 spot by Kichoutkin (TUL) 6-3, 6-3.

The Huskers return to action on Friday, March 12, when the take on Colorado at the Nebraska Tennis Center at 4 p.m.
