Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team came back from a 3-1 defecit to defeat Wichita State 4-3 on Friday evening at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers improved to 3-0 with the victory, while WSU fell to 1-1. Freshman Chelsea Finnegan, playing in her first match as a Husker, rallied from being down a set in her singles match to earn a three-set victory in the final and deciding match of the day.
The Huskers had no margin for error in the doubles matches, as they were only able to field two teams, giving Wichita State an automatic victory at No. 3 doubles. Nebraska needed to win the other two matches to secure the doubles point, but weren't able to do it against the talented Shocker doubles teams, and Wichita State took a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Mary Weatherholt got the Huskers on the board with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at the No. 1 singles spot to tie the match at 1-1. Wichita State reclaimed the lead shortly after with a win at No. 5 singles, and the Shockers stretched their lead to 3-1 after Stephanie Dalmacio won at the No. 2 spot.
Wiveca Swarting closed the margin to 3-2 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 3 singles spot and Jennifer Holmberg tied the score at 3-3 with a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 4 spot shortly after, leaving No. 6 singles as the final and deciding match of the day.
Finnegan lost a first-set tiebreaker to WSU's Iasmine Carpen but came back with a 6-4 win in the second to force a third and deciding set. She fell down 2-1 in the third but took the next five games and won the set 6-2, giving the Huskers a 4-3 team victory.
Nebraska wraps up its busy week on Sunday with another match against a nationally ranked opponent, as it takes on No. 64 Minnesota. First serve from the Nebraska Tennis Center is set for 11 a.m.
