Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team opened its season on Tuesday afternoon with a 6-1 win over the Creighton Bluejays at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Huskers, playing with only five eligible and healthy players, showed no early-season rust en route to their first victory of the year on Head Coach Scott Jacobson's birthday.
Nebraska opened up by winning two of the three doubles matches, as it had to drop the third doubles match by default with only five active players. Mary Weatherholt and Madeleine Geibert had no problems at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-1, while Jennifer Holmberg and Wiveca Swarting rallied from an early 2-1 defecit in their No. 2 doubles match, winning seven straight points to win 8-2.
Nebraska also had to give up the No. 6 singles spot, which Creighton won by default, so the match was tied 1-1 heading into the rest of singles play. Again, although there was a little more pressure on the Huskers to perform well in singles with that much less margin for error, they didn't let it affect their play. Weatherholt made it 2-1 NU with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Anna Kirshenbaum at No. 2 singles, and Holmberg and Swarting clinched the match shortly after for Nebraska with wins of their own. Geibert and Abby Buxton rounded out the scoring for the Huskers, making it a 6-1 final.
The Huskers don't have much time to rest before their next match, as they take on Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday afternoon. First serve is at 4 p.m.
