Lincoln - The Nebraska women's tennis team defeated the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers 6-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The win marked the Huskers' second victory in as many days to start the season, both over in-state opponents. NU once again was able to get the victory despite having only five active players.
The Huskers had little trouble taking the doubles point, although there were several long games and rallies in Madeleine Geibert and Mary Weatherholt's 8-2 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot. Jennifer Holmberg and Wiveca Swarting cruised at the No. 2 spot, winning 8-0.
Holmberg and Swarting carried their momentum through to their singles matches, as neither of the two dropped a game during their matches. Both won 6-0, 6-0 to give Nebraska two more points, making the score 3-1, with UNK's point coming from NU having to forfeit No. 6 singles. Geibert gave Nebraska the team victory shortly after with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles to make it 4-1 in the team score.
Abby Buxton and Mary Weatherholt earned the fifth and sixth points for the Huskers, as Buxton won her match at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-0, and Weatherholt won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2.
Nebraska continues its busy week on Friday as it takes on nationally-ranked Wichita State at the Nebraska Tennis Center. First serve for the match between the Huskers and the Shockers is set for 5 p.m.
