Lincoln ? Sophomore Ashley Hagemann homered and hurled six innings of one-hit ball in a victorious effort, as the Nebraska softball team capped a doubleheader sweep of Wayne State with a 3-0 win in game two Friday night at Bowlin Stadium.<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"?>
Hagemann (2-0) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished with a one-hitter. She did walk five and hit one batter, but countered that by striking out nine. Senior Alex Hupp pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up her second save of the night, as the Huskers also shut out the Wildcats in game one.
Amber Baird took the loss for Wayne State, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.1 innings.
Offensively for Nebraska, Hagemann led the way with a 2-for-3 effort that included a two-run homer. Junior Julie Brechtel also finished 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI.
After failing to get a runner past second base in game one, Wayne State loaded the bases with only one out in the first inning on two walks and a hit batter. But Hagemann escaped the jam with a strikeout and a foul out.
Nebraska stranded four runners through the first three innings before Hagemann hammered a 2-2 pitch off the scoreboard in left for a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
An error and a double from freshman Gabby Banda gave the Huskers runners at second and third with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Brechtel then greeted new pitcher Katie Goetzinger with an RBI single to left that scored sophomore pinch-runner Madison Drake and put NU in front 3-0.
After a leadoff walk, Samantha Earleywine broke up the no-hitter with a sharp single past Banda at third in the top of the sixth. With Wildcats on second and third and no outs, Hagemann fought back and coaxed a fly out and a ground out before striking out Aerielle Earleywine to end the inning.
The Wildcats did not go quietly in the seventh, as an infield single and a Husker error allowed the first two batters to reach. But Hupp battled back and retired the next three hitters to preserve the win.
Nebraska wraps up its fall season next weekend, when the Huskers host the Big Red Fall Classic on Oct. 3 and 4 at Bowlin Stadium.
