Huskers Top Wayne State, 1-0

Lincoln ? Right-handers Robin Mackin and Alex Hupp combined on a two-hit shutout, as the Nebraska softball team defeated Wayne State 1-0 in game one of a doubleheader at Bowlin Stadium on Friday.

Mackin (2-0), a junior, earned the start and was dominant, allowing only two hits and striking out nine in five innings of work. Hupp came in and tossed two hitless innings of relief to earn the save.

Wayne State starter Katie Goetzinger pitched well in a complete-game effort. Goetzinger tossed a two-hitter and allowed only one unearned run while striking out seven and walking none.

After a 41-minute rain delay, Nebraska scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning. Junior Heidi Foland doubled with two outs and one batter later, freshman Gabby Banda scored on a Wayne State error.

The Huskers had a chance for more in the bottom of the sixth when Hupp led off with a double. She moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Madison Drake, but the Wildcats got out of the jam when sophomore Nikki Haget lined into an inning-ending double play.
