Berlin, Germany – One year after taking bronze in the 100-meter hurdles at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, former Husker Priscilla-Lopes Schliep earned the silver medal at 12th IAAF World Championships on Wednesday night in Berlin.
Lopes-Schliep started her quest last night, posting the top time in the preliminaries at 12.56. The five-time Big 12 champion then returned to Olympic Stadium today at 6:45 p.m. (local time) for the semifinals, where she ran the fourth-best time overall and top time in her heat at 12.60. Lopes-Schliep returned for the finals at 9:15 p.m. and ran her best race of the meet, clocking a time of 12.54, but it was not enough to overcome Jamaica’s Brigitte Foster-Hylton, who ran a season-best time of 12.51 to take the gold.
“I am still kind of soaking this in,” Lopes-Schliep said. “I am glad to come out and put Canada on the map and earn our first medal. I just want to be a role model for the younger generation.”
Earlier on Wednesday, current Husker Lehann Fourie ran in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles. A native of Pretoria, South Africa, Fourie missed out on the semifinals after he finished fourth in his heat, with the top three finishers automatically advancing. After the 18 automatic qualifiers, the next six fastest times also advanced, but Fourie hit bad luck again as he had the seventh-fastest time at 13.67. Out of the 45 hurdlers, Fourie finished tied for 24th with Dayron Robles of Cuba. Robles, who took gold in Beijing with a time of 12.93, was able to move on though as he finished third in his heat.
The Huskers will again be represented on the track tomorrow as former Husker and 2005 outdoor 800-meter national champion Dmitrijs Milkevics (Latvia) will run in the preliminaries of the 800 meters at 4:45 a.m. (Central). Current Husker and 2009 indoor long jump champion Nicholas Gordon (Jamaica) will compete later in the morning at 11:10 a.m. (Central) in the preliminaries of the long jump.
