Lincoln ? Nebraska right fielder Adam Bailey became the third Nebraska baseball player taken in the 2009 MLB Draft, as he was selected by the New York Yankees in the 38th round (No. 1,155 overall) on Thursday.
Bailey, who had not been drafted before coming to Nebraska, turned in a solid season in his first year as a Husker after attending South Mountain Community College. He hit .325 with 12 homers and 50 RBIs. He paced the Huskers in homers, RBIs, doubles (15) and slugging percentage, while ranking second in runs scored (35).
The Scottsdale, Ariz., native led the Huskers with 11 multiple-RBI efforts, including eight games with at least three RBIs, and totaled 17 multi-hit games on the campaign. Bailey belted two homers in a game against Cal State Bakersfield and had a four-hit game against NCAA qualifier Baylor on May 15. In addition to his hitting, Bailey also had five appearances on the mound, picking up a win over UL-Lafayette and a save against NCAA qualifier Sam Houston State.
Bailey is the third Husker to be selected over the three-day draft, joining sophomore right-hander Mike Nesseth (15th, Los Angeles-AL) and senior infielder Jeff Tezak (24th, Chicago-AL). The final 10 rounds of the draft are currently underway.
