NU Blanks Alumni, 3-0

Lincoln ? The Nebraska women’s soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout over a team composed of former Huskers in the annual Alumni Game on Sunday at the Nebraska Soccer Field. More than 100 fans watched NU end its spring season with an 8-1-3 record.

Junior Shay Powell got Nebraska on the board first courtesy of a goal in the 39th minute, as each squad battled windy conditions early in the game. Rebecca (Hornbacher) Sanow made several saves in net for the alumni early in the contest, but she misplayed a ball and Powell capitalized with a steal and easy goal.

The Huskers entered halftime with just a 1-0 lead, and the alumni battle back with several scoring opportunities in the second frame. However, sophomore Jaclyn White extended Nebraska’s lead with a score in the 59th minute. Redshirt freshman Blair Slapper centered a ball that junior Brittney Lanier deflected but was unable to control. The ball bounced between players before White was able to find the back of the net.

Nebraska sealed the game less than five minutes later with a goal from sophomore Michaella Fulmer. Slapper put a ball through that Fulmer was able to run down and put past Sano for the score. Sophomore Jessica Mills played the first half in net for NU, while Tara Macdonald logged the second half to combine for the shutout.

The alumni squad was composed of several Husker greats including Sanow, Lindsey Ingram, Katie Bunkers, Jenny Benson, Christine Gluck and Kari Uppinghouse. Several recent Huskers also played, including McKensie Kirchner, Abby Penas, Brittany Pfeil and Aysha Jamani. The alumni team was coached by Selenia Iacchelli and Brooke Bredenberg.
