Huskers Travel To Texas For Last Regular Season Match

    The No. 67 Nebraska men’s tennis team will search for its first Big 12 victory of the season when it travels to No. 14 Texas on Sunday, April 19, in the last regular season match of the year.  NU will try to break its current six-match losing streak against nationally ranked opponents when it faces off with the Longhorns at 2 p.m.

     Leading the Huskers against the Longhorns will be freshman Christopher Aumueller.  Aumeuller has a team-best 4-1 record in Big 12 play and leads the team in total victories with 18. While playing at the No. 2 spot last weekend, Aumueller nearly pulled off the upset of No. 51 Austin Krajicek in the Huskers’ match against Texas A&M, taking the match to a third set before falling 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.  He quickly rebounded with an impressive three-set victory over Sinisa Markovic (Texas Tech) on Sunday to capture his fourth Big 12 victory.

    Another Husker to keep your eye on this weekend is senior Hendrik Stahmer, who is riding a three-match winning streak entering the match.  Stahmer is second on the team in wins with 17 and has 3-2 record in conference play.  The senior has defeated Mikhail Trukshain (OklahomaState), Colin Hoover (Texas A&M) and David Gonzalez (Texas Tech) in his last three appearances.

 

Aggies Too Much For Huskers

    The then-No. 55 Nebraska men’s tennis team came up short in its upset bid of No. 12 Texas A&M on Friday, April 10, falling by the score of 5-2 at the GeorgeP.MitchellTennisCenter in College Station, Texas.

    Playing at the No. 1 doubles spot for only the second time this season, freshmen duo Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim fell to the No. 3-rated doubles team in the country in Conor Pollock and Austin Krajicek (TAMU) 8-4.  The Huskers evened the doubles matches up when David Bendheim and Calin Paar defeated Alexey Grigorov and Colin Hoover (TAMU) 8-6 at the No. 2 spot, but were unable to secure the doubles point after Hendrik Stahmer and Francois Van Impe were defeated by Wil Spencer and Austin Klores (TAMU) 8-6 at the No. 3 spot.

    In singles, NU competed hard against the talented Aggie lineup, pushing five of the six singles matches to a third set.  At the No. 5 spot, Stahmer came from behind to beat Hoover 4-6, 7-6, 1-0 (1).  After splitting the first two sets against Klores, Renato Melo (NU) stormed through the third set to win 6-2, 7-6 (5), 6-1, at the No. 6 spot and secure the Huskers’ only other victory in singles

 

Huskers Drop Last Home Match To Red Raiders

    The then-No. 55 Nebraska men’s tennis team fell to its sixth straight ranked opponent on Sunday, April 12, at the NebraskaTennisCenter. Playing in its last home dual of the season, NU was defeated by No. 35 Texas Tech 5-2.

    Playing in his last match at the NebraskaTennisCenter, senior Hendrik Stahmer (NU) went out on top by defeating David Gonzalez (TTU) in dominating fashion 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot.  The other Husker to collect a singles victory was Christopher Aumueller at the No. 2 spot.  After falling in the first set to Sinisa Markovic (TTU), Aumueller took control of the match and won the next two sets 6-3, 6-4, to improve his record to 18-5 in the spring, 4-1 in the Big 12.  The other Husker playing in his last match at home was senior Renato Melo (NU).  Melo was defeated by Milos Kustudija (TTU) 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot.

    In doubles, Stahmer and Francois Van Impe defeated Joe Hattrup and David Gonzalez (TTU) 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.  Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim fell to No. 12 Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar (TTU) 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, while No. 59 David Bendheim and Calin Paar were dropped by Michael Breler and Markovic (TTU) 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.

 

Scouting the Texas Longhorns

   The Texas Longhorns enter Sunday’s match with a lineup that features two nationally ranked singles players along with two nationally ranked doubles teams.  In singles, Dimitar Kutrovsky comes in ranked at No. 21 in the nation, while Ed Corrie claims the 60th spot in the rankings.  Corrie and teammate Kellen Damico pair up to make up the nation’s No. 27-ranked doubles team, while Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala check in at No. 36 to make up one of the deepest doubles lineups in the country.  Texas owns a record of 16-4, with a 3-1 mark in the Big 12.  The Longhorns have defeated eight nationally-ranked teams this season including Tulsa, Florida State, TCU, Michigan, and Big 12 foes Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and Texas A&M. Texas is coached by MichaelCenter.

 

Huskers Consistently In Rankings

    The Nebraska men’s tennis team has been a mainstay in the ITA top 75 this season.  The Huskers have been ranked every week the rankings have been released, reaching as high as No. 41 on March 3. The Huskers enter this week ranked at No. 67. NU entered the season ranked at No. 73.   

 

Aumueller Breaks Into Rankings

    Freshman Christopher Aumueller was ranked at No. 101 in the newest ITA national singles rankings released on Tuesday, April 15.  He is the first Husker to be in the rankings since David Bendheim was ranked at No. 123 on Feb. 19.

 

Freshmen Doubles Team Ranked No. 89

    Freshmen Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim were ranked at No. 89 in the ITA’s national doubles rankings released on Tuesday, April 14.  It’s the first appearance for the Husker duo this season.  Aumueller and Lindheim own a 14-7 doubles record while playing primarily at the No. 2 spot.

 

McDermott Searching for 17th Victory

    Head coach Kerry McDermott hopes to garner his 17th victory of the year against the Longhorns which would tie his career high for victories in a single season.  The last time NU won 17 matches was in 1990 when it went 17-9.

 

Huskers Winning Streak Snapped

    After winning 13 straight matches, the Huskers’ streak was snapped by No. 23 Boise State on Saturday, March 27.  During the Huskers winning streak, NU defeated four ranked opponents and climbed all the way to No. 41 in the team rankings.
