Playing in his last match at the Nebraska Tennis Center, senior Hendrik Stahmer (NU) went out on top by defeating Daivd Gonzalez (TTU) in dominating fashion 6-1, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot. Stahmer went 2-0 on the weekend and improved his Big 12 record to 3-2 on the season. The other Husker to collect a singles victory was freshman Christopher Aumueller (NU) at the No. 2 spot. After falling in the first set to Sinisa Markovic (TTU), Aumueller took control of the match and won the next two sets 6-3, 6-4, to improve his record to 18-5 in the spring, 4-1 in the Big 12. The other Husker playing in his last match at home was senior Renato Melo (NU). Melo was defeated by Milos Kustudija (TTU) 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot.
“Christopher (Aumueller) and Hendrik (Stahmer) played with great determination and it showed in their performances for the team,” head Coach Kerry McDermott said after Sunday’s match.
In doubles, Stahmer and Francois Van Impe (NU) defeated Joe Hattrup and David Gonzalez (TTU) 8-2 at the No. 3 spot. Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim (NU) fell to No. 12 Raony Carvalho and Christian Rojmar (TTU) 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, while No. 59 David Bendheim and Calin Paar (NU) were dropped by Michael Breler and Markovic (TTU) 8-3 at the No. 2 spot. McDermott was disappointed with the way his team came out and competed against the Red Raiders.
“I felt we came out flat and got beat by a more competitive team who wanted it more than we did,” McDermott said. “This is the first time all year that we weren't ready to compete from the first point and it showed. I am disappointed for the fans that came to watch us play in the cold weather and we didn't give them anything to cheer about.”
The Huskers will finish their regular season when they travel to No. 11 Texas on Sunday, April 19, with first serve set for 2 p.m.
