Huskers Continue Big 12 Play Against Aggies and Red Raiders

    The No. 55 Nebraska men’s tennis team continues Big 12 play this weekend when it takes on the No. 12 Texas A&M Aggies and the No. 35 Texas Tech Red Raiders.  The Huskers will first travel to College Station on Friday, April 10 to take on the Aggies with first serve scheduled for 6 p.m.  NU will then return to the NebraskaTennisCenter to play its final home match of the season against the Red Raiders at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 12.

    The last time the Huskers defeated Texas A&M was in 2006, when they upset the Aggies 4-3.  That victory marks the last victory over a Big 12 opponent for the Huskers. 

    Several Huskers have posted winning records so far this season in Big 12 play.  Freshmen Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim have both started the Big 12 season 3-0, while junior Francois Van Impe has posted a 2-1 mark.  The most impressive player has been Aumueller, who has defeated two nationally ranked opponents in his last four matches, including No. 44 Jordan Rux (Baylor) 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot.

 

Huskers Fall to No. 31 OklahomaState

    For the third straight match, the Nebraska men’s tennis team dropped a one-point decision to a Big 12 opponent after it lost to OklahomaState, 4-3, on Tuesday, April 7 in Stillwater, Okla.

    Both Christopher Aumeuller and Benedikt Lindheim improved their Big 12 singles records to 3-0 on the season when they won at the No. 3 and 5 spots, respectively. Aumueller defeated Aleksey Bessonov 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot, while his freshman counterpart took down Anton Bobytskyi at the No. 5 spot.  After dropping the first set by the score of 6-0, Lindheim battled back to win the next two sets 6-3, 7-5, to capture the victory.  At the No. 4 spot, senior Hendrik Stahmer (NU) defeated Mikhail Trukshain 6-4, 6-2, for his first Big 12 victory of the year.  At the No. 1 spot, junior David Bendheim fell to the nation’s No. 1-ranked player Oleksandr Nedovyesov 6-1, 6-1.

    In doubles, Lindheim and Aumueller tallied the Huskers’ only doubles victory on the day by defeating Trukshain and Bobystyi 9-7 at the No. 2 spot.  Francois Van Impe and Stahmer (NU) fell to Igor Sobolta and Bessonov 8-5 at the No. 3 spot, while Bendheim and Paar were defeated by Nedovyesov and Nathan Byrnes 8-3 at the No. 1 spot.

 

Scouting the Texas A&M Aggies

    The Texas A&M Aggies enter Friday’s match with a 12-6 record and arguably one of the deepest singles lineups in the country.  The Aggies’ top three spots are filled with nationally ranked players including No. 19 Conor Pollock, No. 30 Wil Spencer and No. 51 Austin Krajicek.  Pollock and Krajicek team up to make the nation’s No. 3 doubles team.  The Aggies are 2-4 against opponents ranked inside the top 10 this season including victories over No. 7 Illinois and No. 10 USC.  The Aggies are in second place in the Big 12 standings with a 3-1 conference record after defeating Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.  Texas A&M is coached by Steve Denton.

 

Scouting the Texas Tech Red Raiders

   The Texas Tech Red Raiders are searching for their first Big 12 conference win of the season after dropping their first two matcehs to Texas and Texas A&M.  The Red Raiders enter the match with an 11-8 overall record and a No. 35 national ranking.  Leading the charge for Tech will be No. 58 Raony Carvalho, who upset No. 14 Dimitar Kutrovskry of Texas 7-6, 4-6, 6-2, in his last match.  Carvalho owns a 9-6 recored when playing at the No. 1 spot for the Red Raiders.  Texas Tech is coached by Tim Siegel.

 

Freshmen Undefeated in Big 12 Play

    Freshmen Christopher Aumueller and Benedkit Lindheim have both recorded a perfect 3-0 record in Big 12 matches this season.  Aumueller has won 11 of his previous 12 matches to improve his record to 17-4 this spring.  His team-leading 17 victories this season ties him for 20th all-time on the Nebraska single-season victories list.  Lindheim isn’t far behind Aumueller with a record of 14-6 after winning nine of his last 11 matches primarily at the No. 5 spot. 

 

Huskers Consistently In Rankings

    The Nebraska men’s tennis team has been a mainstay in the ITA top 75 this season.  The Huskers have been ranked every week the rankings have been released, reaching as high as No. 41 on March 3.  NU entered the season ranked at No. 73.   

 

Huskers’ Top Doubles Team Climbs Back Into Rankings

    After losing their first five doubles matches of the season, David Bendheim and Calin Paar have climbed back into the national rankings after starting the year at No. 17.  The duo has worked their way back to No. 59 after winning 12 of their last 17 matches. The last time NU finished the year in the top 75 was in 2006, when it finished at No. 62.

 

Huskers Winning Streak Snapped

    After winning 13 straight matches, the Huskers’ streak was snapped by No. 23 Boise State on Saturday, March 27.  During the Huskers winning streak, NU defeated four ranked opponents and climbed all the way to No. 41 in the team rankings.

 

Huskers Protect Home Court

    Playing at home has been nice to the Huskers so far this season.  NU has a 6-2 record while playing at the NebraskaTennisCenter.  In those six victories, NU defeated No. 66 BYU and No. 75 Southern Mississippi. NU’s only losses have been one-point setbacks vs. No. 7 Baylor and No. 41 Oklahoma.
