Tucson, Ariz. ? Thursday afternoon in Tucson, Ariz., the Nebraska track and field team started its team title defense at the Jim Click Shootout. The Husker multis kicked off the action today at the Roy P. Drachman Stadium with the first day of the two-day men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon.
The Husker duo of Skyler Reising and Bjorn Barrefors sit 1-2, respectively, following day one of the decathlon, with Reising scoring 4,067 points and Barrefors totaling 4,009 points, with each setting two personal bests. The pair started the day with PR’s in the 100-meter dash, as Reising posted a time of 11.00, followed by Barrefors at 11.11. After the long jump, Reising posted a personal-best toss of 48-9 1/2 in the shot put, followed by Barrefors’ personal-best time of 50.26 in the 400-meter dash after the high jump to wrap up day one. The two Husker multis will start tomorrow with the 110-meter hurdles, before competing in the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run.
On the women’s side of the heptathlon, the trio of Megan Wheatley (3,244), Chantae McMillan (3,104) and Rachel Butler (3,056) sit 3-5-6 after competing in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200 meters. Running into a -1.4 m/s wind, Wheatley started the day with a personal-best time of 14.14 in the hurdles. McMillan followed with a personal-best clearance of 5-5 1/4 in the high jump, topping her previous best of 5-5. The three Huskers will start tomorrow with the long jump, followed by the javelin and 800-meter run. All three trail Liz Roehrig of Minnesota, who scored 3,647 points on day one.
The mutlis will be the only athletes in completion tomorrow, with the rest of the meet starting on Saturday. Action is set to start tomorrow 1 p.m. (Central) and then Noon on Saturday. Live results are not available, so check Huskers.com for a full recap.
