Huskers Advance To Finals In Boise

Boise- The Nebraska men’s tennis team won two matches on Friday, March 27, to advance to the finals of the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Tournament in Boise, Idaho.  The Huskers defeated Sacramento State, 4-0, in their morning match and took down Fresno Pacific, 4-3, in their last match of the day at 3 p.m. The Huskers improved their record to 16-2 and have won 13 straight matches.  In the finals, NU will take on either Memphis or No. 23 Boise State at 1 p.m.

In their match against Sacramento State, NU started the day off with a bang when David Bendheim and Calin Paar (NU) upset the No. 45-ranked team of Anton Stryhas and Kiryl Harbatsiuk (SAC) 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles spot.  Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim (NU) took care of business at the No 2 spot by defeating Holden Ching and Marko Starcevic (SAC) 8-5 to secure the doubles point.

In singles, NU needed to win three of the singles matches to secure the victory and did so in impressive fashion.  At the No. 3 spot, Aumueller (NU) defeated Jason Smith (SAC) 7-5, 6-1, while Francios Van Impe (NU) took down Ching (SAC) 6-1, 7-6, at the No. 4 spot. Hendrik Stahmer (NU) defeated Marko Starcevic (SAC) 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot to clinch the fourth and final point for the Huskers.

“We came out really strong in doubles,” head coach Kerry McDermott said. “We played a very complete match from doubles to singles.  It was one of the best matches we have played all year. Our guys did a great job of taking care of business.”

In the Huskers match against Fresno Pacific, which lasted a little over four hours, NU had to battle back from multiple deficits throughout the match.

In doubles, NU was able to sweep all three matches and take the doubles point.  On the day, the Huskers’ doubles teams went a combined 5-0.

In singles, Calin Paar (NU) was the only Husker to record a victory in the top four spots by defeating Vicente Joli (FPU) 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.  At the No. 5 spot, Hendrik Stahmer (NU) beat Maxime Adam (FDU) 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.  Senior captain Renato Melo (NU) was able to clinch the match with his three-set victory over Jose Hilla (FPU) at the No. 6 spot. McDermott was pleased with the way his team battled back throughout the match.

“It was like a boxing match,” McDermott said. “We were taking blows, but we keep getting back up. My hats off to Hendrik (Stahmer) and Calin (Paar) for winning those tough three-set matches.  They played really hard fought matches, and Renato’s (Melo) match was huge for us because it clinched the match.  I thought our guy’s did a good job of refusing to lose. This was a good indicator of how matches in the Big 12 will be.”

The Huskers will look finish the weekend 3-0 and win the tournament tomorrow when they face either Memphis or No. 23 Boise State in the finals at 1 p.m.
