Huskers Defeat No. 66 BYU

Lincoln? The No. 53 Nebraska men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to nine on Saturday, March 21, with a 4-3 victory over No. 66 BYU at the Nebraska Tennis Center.  The Huskers victory over the Cougars is their fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.  NU split the singles matches with the Cougars and had to rely on the doubles point for the victory.

In doubles, David Bendheim and Calin Paar (NU) got off to a blazing start for the Huskers at the No. 1 spot by defeating Roman Warias and Georgy Batrakov (BYU) 8-2. Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim (NU) didn’t waste any time securing the doubles point for the Huskers defeating Evan Urbina and Cassidy Mears (BYU) 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.  With the doubles point victory, NU has now won 12 of the possible 14 doubles points this season.

“The doubles point was crucial tonight,” head coach Kerry McDermott said.  “We got off to a great start at the No. 1 spot and that really helped us the rest of the way.”

In singles, the top-half of the lineup shinned for the Huskers as Bendheim (NU), Paar (NU), and Aumueller (NU) all tallied wins.  At the No. 1 spot, Bendheim (NU) defeated Warias (BYU) 6-2, 6-2, while Paar (NU) took down Urbina (BYU) 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 2 spot. Aumueller was equally impressive at the No. 3 spot defeating Thomas Shubert (BYU) 6-1, 6-4.  Although the Huskers were not able to collect a victory in the bottom half of the lineup, McDermott was still pleased with the play of his singles lineup.

“BYU is good program and this is a good win for us,” McDermott said.  “I thought out top three singles players played extremely well.”

The Huskers return to action at Sunday, March 22, with two scheduled matches.  NU will take on Southern Mississippi at 10 a.m., and in-state foe Creighton at 6 p.m., both at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
