Birmingham, Ala. ? Three Husker bowlers captured spots on the all-tournament team as No. 2 Nebraska topped the Holiday Classic tournament at Birmingham, Ala., on Sunday afternoon.
NU rolled a total pinfall of 11,993, which was more than 200 pins ahead of top-ranked Vanderbilt. Central Missouri placed third in the tournament with a pinfall of 11,643, while ArkansasState (11,348) and Maryland Eastern Shore (11,305) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Sophomore Katie Ann Sopp placed third for Nebraska, earning a spot on the all-tournament team with an average of 214. Freshman Valerie Calberry and Danielle van der Meer also earned spots on the all-tournament team with fourth and fifth place finishes, respectively.. Calberry rolled a 210 average, while van der Meer threw a 209 average. Junior Cassandra Leuthold placed 16th with an average of 195.
Nebraska’s first place finish was its best since the Capital City Classic in December. The Huskers now have four first-place finishes on the 2008-09 season.
NU has a two-week break before its final regular season tournament at the Music City Classic on March 13-15 in Nashville, Tenn. The Huskers then wait for a bid to the 2009 NCAA Championship tournament, which is held in Detroit, Mich., on April 9-11.
