Huskers Beat Georgia State For Weekend Sweep

Bloomington, Ind.--Fresh of its upset of No. 57 Indiana on Saturday, the Nebraska men’s tennis team continued its hot play by beating Georgia State, 5-2, on Sunday at the IU Varsity Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind.  The Huskers dropped the No. 1 spots in singles and doubles, but were still able to pull out the victory over the Panthers.  The win improves the Huskers' record to 3-1 on the season, with two of those victories coming over ranked teams.

In doubles play, the No. 17-ranked tandem of David Bendheim and Calin Paar (NU) were upset by Nejc Podkrajsek and Martin Shiskov (GSU), 8-6, at the No. 1 spot.  Even with the loss at No. 1, NU was still able to win the doubles point with impressive play from the other two teams.  Hendrik Stahmer and Francois Van Impe (NU) defeated Trenton Spinks and Jackson Moore (GSU), 8-3, at the No. 2 spot, while Benedikt Lindheim and Taylor Boney (NU) beat Lucas Thomaz and William Adeimy (GSU), 8-3, at the No. 3 spot.

In singles play, sophomore Paar (NU) got his first shot at the Huskers' No. 1 singles spot, but was unable to collect a victory as he was defeated by Podkrajsek (GSU) 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. At the No. 2 spot, junior Bendheim was dominant in his victory over Shiskov (GSU) 6-0, 6-3.  Van Impe, Lindheim and Renato Melo were all able garner victories for the Huskers.  Stahmer was unable to finish his match at the No. 4 spot, after retiring in the third set of his match.

Head coach Kerry McDermott was happy to leave the weekend with two victories.

“I thought they (Georgia State) played a little bit above what we saw from them yesterday, but they have a good team,” McDermott said.  “We did what we had to do.  It’s good to come out of this weekend with two victories and we’re looking forward to improving and getting back to work next weekend.”

The Huskers will return to action next weekend on Friday, Feb. 13, against Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 10 a.m.  The Huskers will battle Marquette and Texas-San Antonio the following days on Saturday and Sunday.
