Huskers Beat Ducks For Weekend Sweep

Denver?The No. 61 Nebraska men’s tennis team won its second match of the weekend by defeating Oregon, 5-2 on Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion.  With the victory, the Huskers ended their 10-match road trip to start the season with an overall record of 8-2.  The loss drops Oregon to 7-7 on the year.  The Huskers were helped by another strong performance out of its doubles’ teams and were dominate at the top two singles spots.

In doubles, Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim (NU) took care of business at the No. 2 spot by defeating Duncan MacDonald-Korth and Ric Mortera (ORE), 8-1.  At the No. 3 spot, Hendrik Stahmer and Francois Van Impe (NU) beat Jose Izquierdo and Aryton Wibowo (ORE), 8-4, to capture the doubles point.

David Bendheim (NU) led the way for the Huskers in singles beating Marcos Verdasco (ORE) 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Calin Paar was equally as impressive at the No. 2 spot defeating Alexander Cornelissen (ORE) 6-3, 6-4.  In his first action of the weekend, senior Renato Melo (NU) beat MacDonald-Korth (ORE) 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot, while Stahmer (NU) was victorious at the No. 4 spot, defeating Izquierdo (ORE) 6-2, 6-0.

Head coach Kerry McDermott was happy with the performance of his team over the weekend and is looking forward to playing their first match at home next Saturday, March 7, after playing their first 10 matches on the road.

“Today was a really good win for us,” McDermott said. “We played another really good doubles point to start the match. I liked how this was a total team victory. Our guys were carrying each other. We’re looking forward to getting better this week and playing our first home match on Saturday.”

NU’s next action will be on Saturday, March 7, when the Huskers play their first match at the Nebraska Tennis Center this season.  The Huskers will take on Wichita State at 9 a.m., Bradley at 3 p.m., and UMKC at 7:30 p.m., in triple header action.
