Huskers Top No. 52 Pioneers

Denver?The No. 61 Nebraska men’s tennis team upset the No. 52 Denver Pioneers 5-2 on Friday, Feb. 27, at the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion in Denver, Colo.  The Huskers won the No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 singles spots and also collected the doubles point in route to their fourth straight victory and fourth win over a ranked opponent this season.

 

In doubles play, David Bendheim and Calin Paar (NU) were able to defeat Martin Zimmermann and David Simson (DU), 9-7, in a closely contested match at the No. 1 spot.  NU was able to collect the doubles point when Hendrik Stahmer and Francois Van Impe defeated Ravjot Dhatt and Benny Althaus (DU), 8-6, at the No. 3 spot.

 

The Huskers were led by Bendheim (NU) in singles, the junior beat Zimmermann (DU) 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.  After dropping the No. 2 and 3 singels spots, Stahmer (NU), Van Impe (NU), and Lindheim (NU) all tallied victories for the Huskers in route to their fourth straight win.  Stahmer defeated Yannick Weihs (DU) 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 4 spot, while Van Impe took down Varun Gunnarsson (DU) 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 5 spot. Benedikt Lindheim defeated Varun Gunaseelan (DU) 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot.

 

Head coach Kerry McDermott was pleased with the way his doubles team’s preformed today.

 

“We played a very good doubles point tonight” McDermott said.  “There was a lot of pressure.  I felt our guys played really well under pressure and that really carried into the singles. We’ve won four in a row and we want to keep up the good work tomorrow and beat Oregon.”

 

The Huskers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 28, when they take on the Oregon Ducks at 12 p.m. This time is different than previously posted in hopes to play the match outdoors. If the weather does not corporate, the match will be moved back to its original start time at 7 p.m. Check back to Huskers.com for any time changes regarding tomorrow’s match against Oregon.
