Husker Baseball Blog - Feb. 22

Game 4: Nebraska (2-1) at Louisiana Lafayette (1-2)

The Huskers go for the series win this morning, as they take on Louisiana Lafayette beginning at 11:30 a.m. (central). Check back throughout the day as the blog will be updated with information and updates from today's games. The Husker baseball pregame show begins at 11a.m. on Huskers.com and on selected Husker Sports Network station.

Monday - 2:05 a.m.
The Huskers are just rolling back into town after getting back from Louisiana, as the nearly 12 hours of travel to get back to Lincoln via New Orleans, Denver and Omaha. For fans who asked why today's game didn't start earlier, the start time was actually pushed up a half hour from the orignal starting time when the teams learned of the travel schedule. Having seen first hand when we have adjusted game times for travel considerations for home games, fans also don't typically turn out earlier for games, as many of them have other things to do on Sunday morning. A long day is almost completed for the Huskers, whose day began with a team meal at 7:45 a.m. before getting to the park at 9:30 a.m. In a few hours, most them them will be in their Monday morning classes, as sometimes it is lost on people that they are student-athletes, with the emphasis on student. We'll see you Wednesday afternoon at Hawks Field for the home opener.

2:45 p.m.
Matt Freeman pitches a perfect 10th and we are fit to be tied....final score 5-5....and How Bazaar is playing on the PA.

Protested Game

SECTION 13. a. For regular-season contests, each conference should adopt

a procedure for protesting a game when a coach claims that an umpire’s

decision is in violation of these rules.

No protest ever shall be permitted on judgment decisions by the umpire.

b. Any protest by the coach of a competing team must be made at the

time of the action or incident that caused the protest and before play

is resumed. If the game ends (legal contest) in a protestable situation,

the offended team has until all fielders have left fair territory to voice

its protest intentions. All protests must be made to the umpire-in-chief.

Decisions on a protest involving nonconference teams shall be resolved

by the secretary-rules editor of the rules committee.

c. When a coach claims that an umpire’s decision violates NCAA rules, the

umpire-in-chief must: (1) allow the coach the right to file a protest; (2)

announce to each coach, to the official scorer and to the public-address

announcer that the game is being played under protest; and (3) note and

record the game situation at the time of the protest.

d. No replay of any part of a game will be allowed even if the protest is

proven to be legitimate, if the play in question did not directly affect the

outcome of the game.

e. If the protest is proven to be legitimate and could have had a bearing

upon the game, then it is upheld and play resumes from the point of the

protest.

Note: For nonleague games, it is the responsibility of the two competing

teams to a

1:49 p.m.
Collisions and arguements are the order of the inning as Kyle Bostick's popup was dropped by Tyler Farst after he collided with Bostick and Kalkowski. NU Head Coach Mike Anderson is in a lengthy discussion with the umpiring crew. The game is now being played under protest.

1:48 p.m.
Wild about Farst: Tyler Farst doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the Huskers a 5-3 lead

1:32 p.m.
Wild about Kash: Kalkowski's 1-0 offeing was high and went straight to the screen and bounced back to Cory Burleson, who fired a strike home to get Les Smith, who tripled to open the inning, out at the plate. Heads up play by the freshman catcher. Huskers clinging to a one-run lead in the the 7th

1:27 p.m.
Its stretch time in Lafayette and the Huskers still lead 4-3. The crowd is up on their feet singing along to Centerfield as a crowd of 2,234 is enjoying a picturesque afternoon. It is a little quiet here without constant parade traffic this afternoon.

1:22 p.m.
Tezak strumbles and falls but holds on to the popup off the bat of Matt Hicks to end the inning without any damage. NU leads 4-3 after six innings and Blake Wascom is now in for ULL to open the seventh.

1:18 p.m.
ULL is using a two-out rally putting runners on the corners and now Kash Kalkowski is in the game after Roualdes got the Huskers into the fifth.

1:05 p.m.
Cooooooooooper - Khiry Cooper's third hit of the day is a two-out solo homer putting the Huskers up 4-3. Cooper is now 3-for-3 on the afternoon.

1 p.m.
Its all Tezak, all the time, as he accounted for putout or assists on all three outs in the inning; We are through five with the score tied at three...did you expect anything else but a close game after the way this series has beeb.

12:51 p.m.
Talk about short-lived lead;  Les Smith homered to open the fifth; we are now tied at 3-all

12:50 p.m.
Huskers lead 3-2 going to the bottom of the fifth.

12:48 p.m.
Freshmen Khiry Cooper and Cody Asche open the fifth with singles, as Cooper has his first two-hit day as a Husker. The Huskers load the bases before Ben Kline clears them with a double to right center; Huskers now lead 3-2.

12:35 p.m.
Jeff Tezak completes the fourth with a diving stop to his right, gets up and fires a strike to first to end the fourth. A brilliant play by the senior and the Huskers go into the fifth trailing 2-0. The Huskers put the Cajuns down in order for the first time since the seventh inning of Saturday's twinbill opener.

12:32 p.m.
Huskers go down in order in the top of the fourth and ULL is now up 2-0 in  the bottom of the fourth.

12:25 p.m.
ULL's Trais Whipple turns in the first web gem of the day, making a sliding back-handed catch in foul territory off the bat of Jeff Tezak to open the fourth.

12:24 p.m. - VIDEO UPDATE
There will be no video for today's game. Technical difficulties are preventing fans from watching the game. Remember, I am just the messenger and can't help with video questions.

12:22 p.m.
Kyle Bostick makes it 2-0 with a two-out RBI single after three innings

12:13 p.m.
Cory Burleson singled to center for his first college hit, but DJ Belfonte grounded into a double play and the Huskers are scoreless after three innings. ULL is up 1-0 in the bottom of the third.

12:07 p.m.
ULL gets on the board in the second as Scott Hawkins opened the frame with a triple to center before scoring on Chad Keefer's sacrifice fly to center. The wind is blowing briskly out, especially to center and right center and anything in the air in those parts of the park have the potential for trouble for both teams.

Noon
The Huskers threaten in the second with a pair of hits, but come up empty; Score remains deadlocked in the bottom of the second

11:48 a.m.
Jordan Roualdes walked Brian Bowman, but picked him off at first base. It was the first pickoff by a Husker pitcher since 2007, as NU did not pick off a runner last season. Neer picked off Scott Hawkins at second baseball in the eighth innig last night. It is scoreless after one inning of play.

11:37 a.m. - VIDEO Update
The video stream is not working and the Huskers went down in order in the top of the first. The folks at JumpTV are aware of the issue and are working on it.

11:30 a.m.
We are waiting for the exchange of the lineup cards and the race to get today's game started. We are playing baseball's version of beat the clock, as the Huskers have a plane to catch in New Orleans early Sunday evening. The game is being shown locally on TV, so its an 11:35 ish start. The good folks at ULL brought us Meche's Donut King donuts this morning and they are quite good. It is 49 degrees at game time with wind blowing out at 15-20 mph to the north.

11:15 a.m.

10:55 a.m.
Today's TBA starter for ULL has now revealed himself to be left-hander Alex Fuselier, so we have a lefty vs. lefty pitching lineup. The late announcement has forced the Huskers to adjust their lineup and it will not be available until after infield practice.

10:30 a.m.
A little bad news on the injury front, as freshman Boomer Collins will be out of the lineup today with a thumb injury. Collins suffered the injury in the first inning when Michael Cook's pitch hit him on the hand, but home plate umpire Eddie Newsome ruled the ball hit the bat, much to the display of Mike Anderson and Collins, who argued the call. Collins underwent x-rays yesterday and the team doctors will look at the injury when the team returns to Lincoln later tonight. Listen to the Husker pregame show with Greg Sharpe and Lane Grindle for Anderson's thoughts on Collins' injury and the series to date.

10:15 a.m.
Welcome back to M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field in Lafayette for the finale between the Huskers and Ragin' Cajuns. All three games so far have been one-run contests with the Huskers looking to win the series this morning. A win today would be a good stepping stone for a youthful Husker team against a quality team on the road.
