Huskers Fly Past Eagles

Lincoln - The Nebraska women’s tennis team beat Eastern Michigan 7-0 on Friday afternoon at the Nebraska Tennis Center. Nebraska moved to 4-0 with the win while Eastern Michigan fell to 2-5.

 

The Huskers won all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead, including an 8-1 victory by Madeleine Geibert and Jana Albers at the No. 1 doubles spot. Abby Buxton and Marianne Cicmanec won their match at No. 3, 8-2, while Maria Ring and Wiveca Swarting won at the No. 2 position 8-6.

 

Swarting got on the board first for the Huskers in singles play, sweeping her opponent for the second straight match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Karina Ahuja. Ashley Finnegan made it 3-0 Nebraska after her 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles. Geibert sealed the win for the Huskers, winning 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot to give NU its fourth point.

 

Mary Weatherholt (No. 2), Jana Albers (No. 4) and Stephanie Evans (No. 5) all won their singles matches as well to make it a clean sweep of the Eagles.

 

“The kids came out with the same energy they always do and that was great to see,” Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. “Coach (Scott) Jacobson and I are excited to see what this team can accomplish if they continue to play hard for each other.”

 

Nebraska plays again on Sunday against Colorado State at the Nebraska Tennis Center. First serve is at 11 a.m.
