San Antonio--The Nebraska men’s tennis team fell to 3-2 on the season after dropping a close match to the No. 61 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 4-3, Friday afternoon in San Antonio. The Huskers battled their way to a 3-3 tie after all singles matches were played, but were unable to collect the doubles point and the victory.
Calin Paar (NU) led the way for the Huskers in singles as he handled Laurent Montoisy (TAMCC) 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot. Christopher Aumueller (NU) continued his impressive start to the season by defeating Dmitry Novikov (TAMCC) 6-1, 4-6, 6-2, at the No. 3 spot. Hendrik Stahmer was the only other Husker able to collect a singles victory at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles, the duo of Stahmer and Van Impe were the only Husker team to collect a victory, defeating Pace and James Langford (TAMCC) 8-6. No. 17 ranked Paar and Bendheim were defeated by Pavlov and Novikov (TAMCC) 8-5 in the No. 1 doubles spot, while freshmen Aumueller and Lindheim were taken down by Montoisy and Zunio (TAMCC) 9-7. Head coach Kerry McDermott said he stressed the importance of starting off stronger to his team after the match.
“All week I said this was going to be a tough match,” McDermott said. “I told our guys we have to get off to a better start. We’re kind of getting off to slow starts and we need to fix that at this time in the season. I like the way we competed, we competed really hard. We just have to start our matches stronger.”
The Huskers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 14, against the Marquette Golden Eagles with serve time set for 1 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center. NU will conclude weekend play with a match against host Texas-San Antonio on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 10 a.m.
