Huskers Drop Match To UNLV

The No. 75 Nebraska men’s tennis team fell to 1-1 on the year after dropping a close match to the UNLV Rebels, 4-3, at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas, Nev., on Sunday.  After defeating the San Francisco Dons on Saturday, 6-1, the Huskers were not able to keep the momentum going into Sunday, dropping several close matches.

In singles, the Huskers were only able to win one match in the top five spots as Calin Paar defeated Mehdi Bouras at the No. 2 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.  The other Husker to collect a win in the singles category was freshman Benedikt Lindheim.  Lindheim defeated Bryan Miller,  6-3, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot to improve his record to 2-0 on the year.  No. 75 David Bendheim was upset by No. 111 Elliot Wronski 6-4, 7-5, at the Huskers' No. 1 spot. Freshman Christopher Aumueller dropped his record to 1-1 on the year after losing to Luca Barlocchi, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot.  Senior captain Renato Melo dropped his first match of the season to Attila Toth 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 5 spot.

After dropping the first match in doubles play, Aumueller and Lindheim took down Mehdi Bouras and Wesley Burrows, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot and Stahmer and Francois Van Impe defeated Attila Toth and Bryan Miller, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot. No 17 Bendheim and Paar were defeated for the second time on the weekend by Wronski and Barlocchi, 8-5.  Head coach Kerry McDermott was pleased with the way his team battled throughout the match but knows his team must learn how to play smarter.

 “I thought we competed well. It was a good battle,” McDermott said.  “We knew this would be good match.  They are good team they played a little bit smarter than we did.  I think it’s a good eye opener for this team and we will get better from it.”

The Huskers will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 7, against Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., before taking on Georgia State on Sunday, Feb. 8.
