The Nebraska men’s tennis team kicked off the 2009 season in impressive fashion with a 6-1 victory over No. 68 San Francisco in Las Vegas, Nev., on Saturday. The Huskers dominated from the start winning the first four singles matches and only dropping two matches on the day.
At the No. 1 singles spot, junior David Bendheim was dominant in his victory over Tommy Tu, 6-4, 6-3, while sophomore Calin Paar defeated Rainer Nachbauer (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 2 spot. Freshman Christopher Aumueller started his Husker career by winning a wild match over Asaf Cohen, 6-1, 6-7, 11-9, at the No. 3 spot. Another freshman started his Husker career off with a victory as Benedikt Lindheim defeated Jacob Hartwig (6-2, 6-3) at the No. 6 spot.
In doubles play, Bendheim and Calin Paar, ranked at No. 17 in the nation, dropped a tough match at the No. 1 spot to Cohen and Tu, 8-6, but NU was able to take the next two doubles matches to close out the day. Freshman duo Aumueller and Lindheim defeated Einar Hart and Michael Carreno, 8-4 at the No. 2 spot, while Hendrik Stahmer and Francois Van Impe beat Mitch del Rosario and Rainer Nachbauer, 8-1 at the No. 3 spot. The Huskers' lone singles loss came at the No. 5 spot as Van Impe was defeated by Einar Hart, 6-0, 6-2.
Head coach Kerry McDermott was pleased with the way his team performed and is looking forward to a match-up with UNLV on Sunday.
“It’s a good way to get the season started,” McDermott said. “If we want to make it to NCAAs, we have to beat some nationally ranked teams like San Francisco. We’re looking forward to playing UNLV on Sunday. It’s going to be a good match. We’re ready to battle.”
