Huskers Set To Kick Off 2009 Season In Las Vegas

The Nebraska men’s tennis team kicks off its 2009 spring season with two matches in Las Vegas Nev., beginning on Friday, Jan. 31, against the San Francisco Dons and concluding on Saturday, Feb. 1, against the host UNLV Rebels. Both matches will start at 11 a.m. and take place at Fertitta Tennis Complex located on UNLV’s campus.  The Dons will enter the match as the No. 67 team in the nation, but dropped their first two matches this year to Portland and No. 34 Washington.  UNLV will enter the weekend on a bit of a hot streak winning the first two matches of its early season over WeberState and UMKC. 

 

Huskers In The Rankings

The Nebraska tennis team will enter the 2009 season ranked among the top 75 teams in the nation at No. 73 according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association pre season rankings.  The Huskers will also be represented in the singles rankings with David Bendheim at No. 74.  In the doubles rankings, Bendheim and Calin Paar will start the year ranked at No. 17 in the nation.  NU also made a mark in the regional rankings as five players placed in the central region singles rankings and three teams made the doubles rankings.

Scouting the San Francisco Dons

Coming out of the West Coast Conference, the San Francisco Dons entered the year ranked at No. 67 in the nation.  The Dons returned three players from a year ago who were named to the All-WCC team including their No. 1 player senior Tommy Tu.  Tu compiled a 13-9 singles record and a 15-9 doubles last year.  The Dons dropped their first two matches of the season to Portland, 4-3, and No. 34 Washington, 7-0.

 

Scouting the UNLV Rebels

UNLV will look to continue its hot streak this weekend after defeating WeberState, 7-0, and UMKC, 6-1, to start the season.  The Rebels return four starters from a year ago.  The Rebels’ top player is Elliot Wronski, who is ranked at No. 111 in the nation. He defeated Sasche Kiehne (UMKC) 6-4, 6-1, in his only match last weekend.
