Huskers Continue Strong Play at Regional Championships

After an impressive first day at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., the Nebraska men’s tennis team continued its strong play on Saturday, advancing two players to the quarterfinals in the main singles draw and two doubles team to the semifinals of the main doubles draw.

In singles play, junior David Bendheim continued his success from Friday by defeating Anton Bobytskyi (Oklahoma State) 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.  Bendheim will face fifth-seeded Sergey Avdeyev (Oklahoma) in tomorrow’s quarterfinal match.

“David kind of played as expected and played very well,” head coach Kerry McDermott said. “I think these guys are starting to show that we can play at this kind of level.”

The other Husker player to reach the quarterfinal round was sophomore Calin Paar. Paar topped Ionut Beleleu (Oklahoma) 6-3, 6-2, to advance. Paar will face off against Maor Zirkin (Drake) in Sunday’s quarterfinal. Coach McDermott was pleased with the way his sophomore - and team - are performing right now.

“I was really impressed with singles today,” McDermott said. “Calin (Paar) played extremely well. He played very strong. We have to keep continuing to improve.”

In the doubles bracket, Bendheim and Paar will face off against teammates Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim in the semifinals after each team won two matches on Saturday. Bendheim and Paar defeated Tulsa 9-7, while Aumueller and Lindheim took down Oklahoma 8-4 in the quarterfinal round. Tomorrow’s match between the two Husker pairs will begin at 3 p.m. CT.
