Huskers Finish Productive Day at Regional Championships

The Nebraska men's tennis team concluded fall play Friday at the ITA Central Region Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Seven Huskers were in action when the main draw began at 8 a.m.  David Bendheim and Calin Paar both advanced to the third round of play which begins Saturday at 9 a.m.

Bendheim defeated Eric West (Southern Illinois) 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-3, to advance to the second round. He then defeated Jonathan Obrist (Wichita State) 6-1, 6-1.  Paar defeated Erwin Quintanilla (UMKC) 6-1, 6-1, and Ricardo Lau (Drake) 6-3, 6-3 to reach the third round. 

Husker Benedikt Lindheim won his first round match against Chris Nott (Arkansas) 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2. Lindheim was not as successful in his second round match falling to James Seagraves (Tulsa) in a tough three-set match 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Hendrik Stahmer defeated Ken Nordheim (St. Louis) 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before dropping his second-round match to Alberto Sottocorno (Tulsa) 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Francois Van Impe, Chistopher Aumueller and Taylor Boney all lost their first round match-ups to dropp into the singles consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket Van Impe defeated Matt Gordon (St. Louis) 6-0, 6-4, to move on to the second round, while Christopher Aumueller defeated Sean McManus (Saint Louis) 6-2, 6-1. Taylor Boney was ousted from the tournament after losing to Albert Jou (Tulsa) 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (4) in the consolation round.

In doubles play, all three Husker pairs moved on to the next round of the main draw.  One of the more suprising victories of the first day came from the team of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim, the pair upset Sottocorno/Ballok (Tulsa) 9-7. Sottocorno and Ballok were the second seeded doubles team in the tournament.
