Huskers Busy on Day One of Regional Tournament

Salt Lake City, Utah- The Nebraska women’s tennis team had eight players in action on day one of the ITA Central Regional Tournament in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Thursday. Qualifying for the Main Draw as well as the first round of the Main Draw took place on the day.

 

While freshman Madeleine Geibert and junior Wiveca Swarting received automatic entrances into the Main Draw, six other Huskers had to win two matches in qualifying singles on Thursday to advance to the Main Draw. Freshman Mary Weatherholt was the only Husker to make it out of the qualifying stages, as she cruised in her two matches, beating Utah’s Karine Bourdages 6-0, 6-2, and Kansas’ Maria Martinez, 6-1, 6-1.

 

Senior Maria Ring won her first match in qualifying play, beating UtahState’s Taylor Perry 6-3, 6-2, before falling to Colorado’s Franziska Jendrian, 6-4, 6-1. Abby Buxton also won her first match over Kristina Radan of Oklahoma, 6-4, 7-5, before falling to another Sooner, Tara Eckel, 5-7, 6-4, (10-6). Jana Albers, Marianne Cicmanec and Jennifer Holmberg also fell short in their bid to advance to the Main Draw.

 

All three Huskers who qualified for the Main Draw advanced past their first round matches. Weatherholt defeated Kansas’ Kunigunda Dorn, 6-1, 6-1, Swarting beat Kate Lukomskaya of Arkansas, 6-1, 6-2, and Geibert beat the eighth overall seed in the tournament, Colorado’s Monica Milewski, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.

 

The Huskers also have two doubles teams alive in the tournament. Holmberg and Weatherholt beat the fourth-seeded team of Erin Monson and Anastasia Putilina, 8-6, while Ring and Swarting beat Wyoming’s Sarah Summerfield and Rebecca Berger, 8-3. The teams of Albers/Geibert and Buxton/Cicmanec fell in their doubles matches.

 

Nebraska has three singles players and two doubles teams still left in day two of the tournament, which will take place on Friday.
