Huskers Pick Up Second-Straight Victory

Lincoln - Led by Amanda Jeffries in air rifle and Christine Costello in smallbore, the Nebraska rifle team picked up its second victory of the weekend Sunday with a 4,610-4,584 victory over Air Force. The 5th-ranked Huskers improved to 2-1 on the season after its weekend sweep of 6th-ranked Army and the No. 17 Falcons.

Jeffries shot a match-best 588 in air rifle, and Costello led the entire field with a 582 in smallbore. Jeffries defeated Air Force's Tom Chandler by one point for the best overall score with a 1,163.

Individuals Ashley Lane and Sheena Mahloch had strong showings for the Huskers in air rifle, even though they didn't count toward the team score. Lane shot a 576, which would put her third for the Huskers on the day, behind Jeffries' 588 and Ryann McGough's 580. Mahloch, a freshman, scored a 573, the best in her short career as a Husker.

In smallbore, Jeffries and freshman Katie Kostal shared second-place honors for the Huskers, with each scoring a 575.

The Huskers will travel to Alaska on Friday, Oct. 24th for a pair of matches against No. 1 Alaska-Fairbanks and No. 3 Kentucky. Alaska-Fairbanks is the three-time defending national champion.
