Weatherholt Advances to Semifinals of Midland Invitational

Midland, Texas - Freshman Mary Weatherholt of the Nebraska women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, on Saturday. Weatherholt won her third and fourth round matches en route to her berth in the semifinals, where she will face Texas Tech's Samantha van der Drift on Sunday.

Weatherholt beat Karolina Filipiak of Baylor in the third round 6-2, 6-7 (5), (10-8), then defeated Boise State's Vivien Silfany 6-2, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

Weatherholt was one of three Huskers to advance to the quarterfinals on the day. Freshman Madeleine Geibert beat Boise State's Bianca Jochimsen 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of play and junior Wiveca Swarting beat Miami of Ohio's Anastasia Dracheva 6-1, 6-3 in the third round, giving Nebraska three of the eight remaining players in the tournament.

Geibert would lose to van der Drift and Swarting fell to Texas A&M's Elze Potgieter in the quarterfinals, as both were eliminated from the tournament, leaving Weatherholt as Nebraska's last player standing.

In doubles play late Friday, the team of Geibert and Swarting beat Catalina Cruz and Narine Kazarova from North Texas 8-4 after receiving a first-round bye. The duo won a pair of matches on Saturday, beating Megan Martzolf and Stephanie Danesis of Miami (Ohio), 8-4, in the quarterfinals. In their semifinal match, Geibert and Swarting beat Filipiak and Zuzana Chmelarova of Baylor, 8-3. Geibert and Swarting will play their finals doubles match Sunday morning.

"It was another great day for the Huskers," NU Assistant Hayden Perez said. " The girls found themselves in some very tough matches against some very tough opponents. They battled hard and just came up a few points short. Mary made it through and is looking forward to a good match tomorrow."
