Adam Stern went hitless in five at-bats, while Canada’s eighth-inning rally fell short in a 7-6 setback to Cuba Thursday morning. Stern, who drove in two runs in Canada’s opener against China, went 0-for-5 on Thursday, as Cuba scored four times to erase a 5-3 deficit.
Canada, which is now 1-1 in pool play, pushed across a run in the eighth and had runners on first and second with two outs, but Stern grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the rally. Stern played baseball at Nebraska from 1999 until 2001 and helped the Huskers to their first CWS appearance as a junior. This is Stern’s second Olympic Games appearance, as he was a member of Canada’s 2004 squad that place fourth in Athens.
The Canadians are in action tomorrow morning, as they take on South Korea beginning at 5 a.m. Fans can watch the game in its entirety on NBColympics.com.
