Jamie Gay to Join Huskers This Fall

The Nebraska softball team has added another Nebraska native to its incoming freshman class, as Head Coach Rhonda Revelle announced that Jamie Gay will join the Huskers for the 2008-09 season.

Gay, a Beatrice product, is one of four Nebraska natives among the Huskers’ five-player incoming freshman class. As a senior last fall, Gay was named a first-team infielder on the Lincoln Journal Star’s SuperState team and on the Omaha World-Herald’s All-Nebraska team. She was joined on both teams by her future Husker teammates and fellow first-team Super State and All-Nebraska selections Ashley Hagemann and Nikki Haget of Elkhorn and Madison Drake of Lincoln Southwest.

“Jamie is an excellent athlete who loves to compete and win,” Revelle said. “She is a clutch performer who thrives in pressure situations. We are very much looking forward to Jamie being a member of the Husker softball team.”

As a senior, Gay batted .495 with 16 doubles, two home runs and 30 RBIs. While setting school records for average, hits and doubles, Gay ranked second in Class B in hits and doubles, fifth in average and sixth in RBIs. She helped lead Beatrice to a runner-up finish at the state tournament, where Gay lost to four-time state champion Elkhorn, led by Hagemann and Haget. In the championship game, Gay gave the Lady Orange an early lead by hitting a first-inning home run off Hagemann.

In her junior season, Gay was a second-team SuperState selection while batting .444. Gay, the sixth Beatrice native to play for the Huskers, will look to become the latest Beatrice product to enjoy a successful career at Nebraska. The last Beatrice native to play for the Huskers was Ashley DeBuhr, a three-time All-Big 12 selection from 2004 to 2007.

Gay will join her fellow three Nebraska natives as participants in the fourth annual Nebraska Coaches Association All-Star Softball Game on July 30 at Bowlin Stadium. The four incoming Nebraska natives will give the Huskers nine Nebraska products on the 2008-09 roster, the program’s most since 1980. The lone out-of-state recruit coming to Lincoln this fall is Kirby Wright, a catcher from Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.
