Huskers Stop Sooners

Norman, Okla. - The Nebraska women's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak in Norman, Okla., on Sunday morning with a 4-3 win over the Oklahoma Sooners. The Huskers improved to 14-4 and 3-4 in the Big 12, while Oklahoma fell to 9-8 and 2-3 in the Big 12. The 14th win is one more than Nebraska had all of last season, and with a strong finish to the season the Huskers could equal their all-time single-season wins record of 19.

After dropping the doubles point in their previous three matches, the Huskers got off on the right foot on Sunday, taking No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the point and take a 1-0 lead into singles play. Imke Reimers earned her 71st career doubles victory, tied with Sandra Noetzel for tops all-time at Nebraska, with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles with teammate Jana Albers. The duo improved their Big 12 doubles record to an impressive 5-1. Maria Ring and Wiveca Swarting earned their 13th doubles win of the spring, winning 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

The Huskers took home the first completed singles match as Swarting defeated OU's Chelsea Orr 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Oklahoma took a 3-2 with victories at No. 6, No. 1 and No. 3 before Stephanie Evans took home a three-set thriller at No. 4 singles tie the match at 3-3, leaving the fate of the match in the hands of NU freshman Amber Chandronnait and OU senior Christi Baxley at No. 5 singles.

The situation was eerily similar to last year's match with the Huskers and Sooners in Lincoln. With the match tied at 3-3, then-NU freshman Wiveca Swarting and then-OU senior Irina Lykina battled it out in a three-set marathon to decide the match, with Swarting emerging victorious in the end to give NU a 4-3 win. Chandronnait had the same success as Swarting last year, winning the third set handily, 6-0, giving her the win at No. 5 singles and the Huskers their 14th victory of the season.

The Huskers finished up their road trip with a 2-3 record, and return home next weekend where they are 11-1 this spring with a pair of Big 12 matches, against Missouri on Friday, April 11 and against Colorado on Sunday, April 13. Both matches are scheduled to be played at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
