Nebraska Bowling Earns Public Recognition Award

The Nebraska bowling team has been recognized by the NCAA today with a public recognition award for its latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. The Husker bowling program is among the Division I teams honored nationally for its academic success.

"I'm real pleased to hear this news," Nebraska Head Coach Bill Straub said. "This is an area where Assistant Coach (Paul) Klempa and I don't have much involvement. We're lucky the people we recruit are excellent students besides excellent athletes. We are very pleased that they are receiving recognition for all of their hard work."

All teams recognized posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The public recognition awards are part of the broad Division I academic reform effort.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. High-performing teams receiving awards posted APR scores ranging from 965 to a perfect 1,000.

Multi-year APR scores for all 6,110 Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition awards, will be announced May 6. The announcement also will include immediate and historical penalties for low-performing teams.

The Nebraska bowling team excells both on the lanes and in the classroom, as four current Huskers earned Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll accolades for their academic achievements during fall of 2007. Junior Kaleena Henning and freshmen Kayla Rhoades, Katie Ann Sopp and Kayla Stram were each recognized for their efforts. Recently, the Huskers wrapped up their fifth-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance at Thunder Alley in Omaha, Neb.
