Lincoln --- Assistant men’s basketball coach Tony Benford has announced that he is leaving the Husker program and will be joining the coaching staff at MarquetteUniversity this week. Benford has been on the Husker staff the past two years, helping Coach Doc Sadler and the Huskers to a 37-27 record including a postseason National Invitation Tournament appearance and 20-win campaign in 2008.
Benford, who was the first assistant coach hired by Sadler when he moved to Nebraska in August 2006, said that the decision to leave was a difficult one, but he is pleased to have assisted in laying the foundation for future success in Lincoln.
“I really want to thank Coach Sadler for the opportunity to work on his staff at the University of Nebraska the past two years,” Benford said. “Doc is one of the best coaches in America and I have no doubt that he will get Nebraska to the elite level in the near future. This decision was even tougher for me because Nebraska has the greatest fans in the country and because of the strong leadership of the athletic department under Coach Osborne and Marc Boehm.”
Benford worked primarily with the big men in the Husker program, including first-team All-Big 12 selection Aleks Maric, who finished his career in 2008 ranked in the top five in career scoring at NU and second all-time in rebounds.
“I wish Tony the best and thank him for everything he’s done for the Husker program recently,” Sadler said. “He’s been nothing but a true professional to work with for the past two years and we hope he continues to find success."
