Lawrence, Kan. - The Nebraska women's tennis team fell victim to a sluggish start for the second straight match in a 4-3 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan. on Friday afternoon. The match marked the Huskers second straight 4-3 conference loss, as they fell to Colorado last weekend by that score. The Huskers are now 15-6 overall and 4-6 in conference play this season.
The Huskers struggled out of the gate, losing the doubles point for the third straight match. Head Coach Scott Jacobson utilized new teams in the doubles lineup, pairing Stephanie Evans with Maria Ring at No. 2 doubles and Amber Chandronnait with Wiveca Swarting at No. 3. Evans and Ring lost at No. 2 in a tiebreaker, while Chandronnait and Swarting lost 8-6 at No. 3. Jana Albers and Imke Reimers failed in their bid to win their fourth straight doubles match by losing 8-4 at the No. 1 spot.
Nebraska tied it at 1-1 in singles play with a 6-4, 6-2 victory by Swarting at No. 2 singles. Kansas took a 2-1 lead by winning at No. 4 but the Huskers quickly tied it again with Jana Albers winning at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (8), 6-3. Yuliana Svistun put the Jayhawks on the verge of victory with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles, but NU's Imke Reimers battled back from losing the first set to win at No. 1 singles and tie the match at 3-3, leaving the fate of the match in the hands of Maria Ring at No. 6 singles for the second time in as many contests. Unfortunately for the Huskers, Ring couldn't get past KU's Lauren Hommell, giving the Jayhawks their fourth point and the victory.
The Huskers have one remaining regular-season match left on the schedule, a home meet against Kansas State on Sunday. The team will honor lone senior Imke Reimers in her last home match as a Husker. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
